Portland’s Car Rental Rates Rank Highest in U.S.

According to a survey from CheapCarRental.net, Portland, Ore., had the most expensive daily rental car rates this summer when compared with 49 other U.S. cities.

Portland, Ore., was the most expensive U.S. destination to rent a car this past summer, according to a survey by CheapCarRental.net, which compared rental rates from 50 destinations throughout the United States. To compare rates, the survey focused on the summer months of June, July and August 2013.

In Portland, car renters had to pay an average daily rate of $86 for the cheapest available rental, according to the survey. New York City came in second with an average of $83 per rental day. In the third most expensive rental city on the survey, Boston had a $75 average daily rate.

According to the survey, the lowest car rental rates this summer were in Orlando, Fla. Orlando customers paid only $17 per day, on average, for the cheapest available car. Miami and Philadelphia were also kind on renters' wallets with average daily rental rates of $19.

The top five cities with the most expensive rental rates: 1) Portland, $86; 2) New York City; $83; 3) Boston, $75; 4) Denver, $65; 5) Chicago, $63

The five cities with the least expensive rental rates: 1) Orlando, $17; 2) Fort Lauderdale, $18; 3) Tampa, $18; 4) Miami, $19; 5) Philadelphia, $19

The survey’s car rental rates were collected by CarTrawler, a car rental comparison engine. Each city’s main airport was chosen as the pick-up and drop-off location.
