Quotas Steady for St. John Rental Agencies

Only a limited number of rental cars are allowed to operate on each of the U.S. Virgin Islands. St. John continually operates the full number of cars their quota allows, while neighboring islands, St. Thomas and St. Croix, are not meeting their quotas.

In the Virgin Islands, St. John car rental agencies will remain at their quota of 625 cars, according to St. John's Tradewinds News.

But officials maintain that the reason for the small quota is due to traffic safety in the St. John area. Director of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Jerris Brown, states, “The quotas we have now are the most we can have until they build more roads on St. John. It’s been a while since the quotas were raised, but there’s too much congestion.”

Although car rental agency owners agree that there is a traffic problem, they also believe that by allowing rental cars across the barge from St. Thomas and St. Croix adds to the congestion.

Owners believe that by not increasing their quota, St. John rental agencies have not been able to benefit from the car rental boom.

All rental car agencies on the U.S. Virgin Islands are independents.
