Rental Car Agencies Oppose New County Tax in Allegheny County
Allegheny County car rental customers already pay 17 percent in fees and taxes on a $25 rental, according to RAC representatives.
Representatives of Pennsylvania’s Allegheny County car rental industry are speaking out about the possible increase in taxes to help fund public transit, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Representatives from Enterprise voiced their concerns at a meeting of Allegheny County Council's Committee on Budget and Finance on Sept. 4.
The County Council is looking to adopt another $2 a day fee to fund public transportation. Car rental customers already pay 17 percent in fees and taxes on a $25 rental, according to the news report. The fees include a 2 percent Pennsylvania passenger rental vehicle tax and a 7 percent sales tax.
According to council members, if the new tax is not approved, roads and parks will be closed due to a $30 million budget cut.
The County Council has scheduled a hearing at 5 p.m. Oct. 2. In order for the new fee to pass, at least two-thirds of the council will have to approve the increase.
