“Growth in shared-mobility services continues worldwide,” said Dr. Shaheen. “In this issue of the Carsharing Outlook, we release the January 2015 numbers for the Americas (U.S., Canada, Mexico and Brazil). Since our last Outlook, we have published two papers on carsharing and one white paper on bike-sharing.”

“Our latest research initiatives include a study of peer-to-peer carsharing and its impacts in North America, a one-way carsharing evaluation in North America, a carsharing insurance study and a study of carsharing linked to electric bike-sharing in the San Francisco Bay Area,” added Shasheen.

Here are some highlights from the "Innovative Mobility Carsharing Outlook — Summer 2015":

  • As of Jan. 1, 2015, there were 20 active programs in Canada, 23 in the U.S., one program in Mexico and one program in Brazil, totaling approximately 1,529,811 carsharing members sharing 22,134 vehicles in the Americas.

  • As of Jan. 1, 2015, 20 Canadian operators claimed 336,058 members and shared 5,264 vehicles. In the U.S., 1,181,087 members shared 16,754 vehicles among 23 operators.

  • In Mexico, 8,980 members shared 67 vehicles among one operator as of Jan. 1, 2015. In Brazil, one operator claimed 3,686 members sharing 49 vehicles.
