Uber, a mobile-application-based company that connects customers with vehicle drivers, has extended its insurance offerings to cover driver liability both during tips as well as when a driver is available between trips.

Uber’s new contingent third party liability policy will cover any possible “insurance gap” for accidents that occur while drivers are logged onto the Uber network but not providing a transportation service, according to Uber.

Since it’s reliant on a driver’s personal insurance policy, the Uber policy will only pay if a driver’s personal auto insurance declines or pays zero because of an accident that occurs between trips, says the company.

According to Uber, the coverage for its new liability policy is 50/100/25. For bodily injury, Uber’s policy will cover $50,000 per individual/claim with a total of $100,000 per incident. And property damage will be covered up to $25,000 per incident, says Uber.

In addition, Uber added a new comprehensive and collision coverage plan that covers vehicle damage during a trip. Replacing its prior reimbursement program for collision costs, this new coverage will pay for vehicle damage if your personal auto policy refuses to cover it — a $1,000 deductible with a maximum payment of $50,000 per car.

Uber’s $1 million driver liability coverage (from customer pick-up to drop-off) is still in place, says the company. And Uber drivers still need to carry their own personal auto insurance at all times.
