Central Car & Truck Rental — a Thrifty Car Rental franchise in Rockhampton, Australia — has been fined $77,200 for underpaying one of its employees.
A Thrifty Car Rental franchise in Australia has been fined $77,200 for underpaying a worker, according to a report by the Daily Mercury. The decision occurred in Brisbane’s federal circuit court last month.
Between June 2007 and August 2012, Central Car & Truck Rental in Rockhampton underpaid the employee by $28,828, according to the report. The employee was underpaid his minimum rate of pay, weekend penalties, public holiday rates, overtime and annual leave entitlements.
According to the report, John Edward Featherstone, director of Central Car & Truck Rental, was fined an additional $15,444.
"Successful legal actions such as this, accompanied by significant penalties, demonstrate to anyone responsible for employing staff that it is important to get things right with respect to employee entitlements,” Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James told the Daily Mercury. “Employing staff is a significant responsibility and it’s important that staff receive all their lawful entitlements.”
