Surrey County Council has appointed City Car Club to increase the range of sustainable local transport options available to residents, council employees and businesses in the county. City Car Club was acquired last year by Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

Vehicles will be available near homes and offices in Guildford, Redhill, Dorking, Leatherhead, and Woking, helping to reduce traffic pressures on Surrey’s busy roads, according to the company.

Initially, City Car Club will operate 14 low-emission vehicles, including two plug-in hybrids. There are already plans to expand further, with another five vehicles (including two electric cars) due to launch in Guildford in April.

“Our intention is to build a long-term relationship with Surrey County Council and the people and businesses in the area to demonstrate how useful access to a car club can be,” said Dan Gursel, managing director of City Car Club. “Over the coming months, we’ll be working with the council to promote the program and build awareness of the benefits of car clubs.”

With more than 30,000 members across the U.K., City Car Club is a car club provider for both private and business users. Currently, it operates in 19 cities.

“We’re pleased to invite City Car Club on board as they provide a good alternative to car ownership through pay-as-you-go motoring, enhancing the number of different sustainable transport options available to Surrey residents,” said Mike Goodman, cabinet member for environment and planning at Surrey County Council.
