Geotab has launched a data website that will help fleets better navigate city driving hazards with aggregated datasets about hazardous driving areas, road impediments, and parking, the telematics provider announced at its Geotab Connect event in Toronto.
Data.geotab.com, which is now live, is accessible to fleets at no cost, but it requires a registered account.
The site draws from billions of data points collected every day from the over 1 million vehicles equipped with Geotab telematics devices. Geotab has reached 1.2 million subscribers, said Neil Cawse, the company's chief executive.
"We're proud to be the one of the first resources to provide actionable insights from our global sensor network to help empower businesses and contribute to a rich data ecosystem that will further innovate the world one community at a time,” Cawse said.
Geotab devices pull GPS and accelerometer data from vehicles, as well as surrounding speed, seat belt usage, and engine diagnostics. The data is aggregated to protect personal privacy.
On the website, datasets are categorized under urban infrastructure, location analytics, and weather. The datasets can be leveraged to help improve city-wide efficiency, discover key infrastructure challenges, and guide deployment of automated solutions for issues such as congestion, parking, and poor road conditions. The tool could be used by commercial fleets to improve routing or by city planners working on smart city initiatives.
In addition to the curated datasets, the website also includes sample code, whitepapers, and a data science package.
