The German Federal Association for Car Rentals (BAV) has filed a lawsuit in Berlin’s regional court against the private car-sharing business plan, according to a report by Venture Village.

“We took a look at some of the cars offered on platforms for private car sharing,” the BAV said in a press release. “The results were catastrophic. There were problems with the vehicle body, a slashed tire, serious problems with brakes, damages to steering, operating problems with lighting and motor contamination threats to the environment. Even if this doesn’t apply to every vehicle, considering these serious shortcomings, every case is one too many.”

According to the report, the BAV wants private car-sharing vehicles to meet the same conditions as commercial car rental services.

In order to use their vehicles for car sharing, individuals would need to present their vehicles as “self-driven rental cars,” says the report. This would entail going through a yearly safety evaluation and purchasing a special insurance.

Berlin’s regional court has not set a date for its decision, says the report.
