The Car Connectivity Consortium, a group of over 70 companies that include Apple, Samsung, Panasonic, General Motors, BMW, Volkswagen, and Qualcomm, joined to create the Digital Key standard to ensure that mobile vehicle unlock and start features work across different car and smartphone brands, according to the Next Web.
The standard utilizes near-field communications or Bluetooth Low Energy features on phones to automatically or manually unlock a vehicle within a certain range.
The adoption of a standard also opens the possibility of drivers being able to pick up rental vehicles at their convenience, as well as expand adoption of these features.
