Last month, the Los Angeles City Council approved a policy that would allow Uber and Lyft to apply for permits to pick up passengers at LAX, according to a report by the Los Angeles Times.

Prior to this, ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft could drop passengers off at the airport but not pick them up.

Los Angeles would become the largest city in the U.S. to allow Uber and Lyft to operate alongside taxis at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

“People are baffled that they can take ride share to the airport but can’t take one home,” Councilman Mike Bonin told the Times.

The council members discussed whether the background checks used by Uber and Lyft to screen their drivers put customers at risk. In the end, the final vote was 9 to 6, according to the report.

The City Council agreed to ask the California Public Utilities Commission to add fingerprinting as part of the required background check process for all for-hire drivers, including those driving limousines, shuttles and ride-sharing vehicles.

The last step will be finalizing the contracts between the ride-sharing companies and the city of Los Angeles, according to the report.
