Nissan North America is recalling 515,394 2007-2011 Versa Sedan and 2007-2012 Versa Hatchback vehicles so dealers can replace defective Takata-made driver frontal air bag inflators, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

The Nissan recall is part of the broader Takata recall expansion involving the supplier’s PSDI-5 inflators that contain calcium sulfate as a drying agent.

“The affected vehicles have a driver frontal air bag inflator that may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to moderate absolute humidity, temperatures, and temperature cycling,” NHTSA warned on its website. “An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.”

Because remedy parts from a different supplier aren’t yet available, Nissan will first send an interim recall notification letter to affected vehicle owners by the end of September. When sufficient replacement parts become available, another letter will go out informing vehicle owners they’re free to schedule the repair. There will be no charge for the customer.

Versa owners can reach Nissan customer service at (800) 647-7261.
