COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Senate this week opted to delay action on a proposed state rental tax, after the Ohio Taxation Department warned that the bill lacks details on how the tax would be collected and when it would expire.

Moreover, officials at the Taxation Department expressed concern that the tax would generate far less revenue than previously projected.

The car rental tax was proposed to cover an estimated $29 million buyout of a state contract with Envirotest, a company that performs smog tests on vehicles.

The transportation budget bill containing the rental tax has already passed the House.
