Car rental operators need to take a flexible approach to managing rental fleets, especially during crises and challenges such as 9/11, the Great Recession, COVID-19, and the microchip shortage, says Solomon Cramer, president at Avis Rent-A-Car of Central Pennsylvania and North Central New Jersey.
In this video shot at the 2025 International Car Rental Show, Cramer cites the value of retaining vehicles during downturns, as seen in the pre-tariff vehicle purchases in March 2023. He also highlights the benefits of diversifying fleet ownership and cycling methods, including retailing 25% of cars last year and aiming for 50%. Fleet costs can represent 40% to 50% of the bottom line, so improving fleet management can boost revenues and profits.
