The first peer-to-peer carsharing service has been launched in the Caribbean. To rent a vehicle, Rent Yuh Ride (RYR) will connect travelers to private car owners in Kingston, Jamaica.
Led by a team of women, Rent Yuh Ride is accessible online. Car owners sign up, upload their vehicle information and documents to be approved, and then list on the site for free. Travelers can sign up, search for available vehicles in their desired location, choose a pickup location, and then book.
RYR has partnered with the Insurance Company of the West Indies to provide private rental insurance to car owners at a discounted rate, according to the company. Additionally, RYR plans to use Jumio, an online identity verification company, to authenticate users on the online platform.
"Travelers deserve a better way to rent cars; they need options and what's available just doesn't cut it," said Cherie Williams, founder and CEO of RYR. "With the Rent Yuh Ride platform, you can choose from a wide range of vehicles that fit your style, a wide range of prices that fit your budget, and there's absolutely no negotiating back and forth. Moreover, car owners have underutilized vehicles for months at a time and Rent Yuh Ride will provide new opportunities for them to earn additional income."
