A man allegedly conned a rental car clerk into giving him the keys to a $17,000 rental car, claiming the name on the rental contract was his “partner,” according to the Marco Eagle.

Police say the man called attention to a pre-printed rental contract, which was visible from the counter at a Hertz Rent-A-Car in Naples, Fla. He allegedly told the clerk he was picking up a car for the man whose name was on the contract, according to an incident report.

Reports state that the man claimed he was the “partner” of the man whose name was on the contract.

The clerk allowed the man to sign the rental contract, and then allowed him to drive off in a gray 2010 Nissan four-door with a North Carolina tag.

The man who was supposed to rent the car showed up at Hertz soon afterward to pick up the vehicle and was told his partner had already picked up the car. He then told the clerk that no one else was authorized to pick up the car.
