Hertz plans to sell its used vehicles through its partnership with Shift, an online used car website that offers customers test drives, according to a report by USA Today.
For Hertz, selling cars directly to consumers means a greater profit per car compared to selling cars wholesale at auction, says the report.
Shift provides customers with an app for looking at its vehicle inventory and scheduling test drives. For test drives, Shift employees will bring the car to the consumer.
Shift CEO George Arison told USA Today that working with Hertz is “a good fit for us, because we don’t own the cars we sell. We want to be a place for fleets to sell to consumers, and we could also expand to manufacturers who have so many low-mileage cars coming off lease.”
For Shift, Hertz’s inventory will provide more vehicles and more access to other regions due to Hertz’s national presence, according to the report. The Shift-Hertz partnership started in May in the San Francisco and Los Angeles metro areas and will now be expanding to Shift’s other location in the Washington, D.C. area.
Jeff Adams, vice president of vehicle remarketing at Hertz, told USA Today that Hertz is eager to “partner with innovative companies like Shift to leverage their technology and bring a seamless, hassle-free purchase experience to our car buyers.”
