WhipCar UK Shuts Down Operations
WhipCar has closed its peer-to-peer car sharing service due to ‘limited resources’ and ‘barriers’ in integrating car sharing in the UK.
WhipCar announced the close of its peer-to-peer car sharing service in the UK, effective March 12. The company is no longer accepting new bookings or new membership.
Bookings scheduled on or after March 12 have been cancelled and all affected drivers have been refunded. Owners with bookings ending in March will be paid during the week of March 18, according to WhipCar.
WhipCar launched in April 2010 in London and spread nationwide in three years. Members were able to make a profit by listing their idle vehicles to rent, the company stated.
On its website, WhipCar wrote that “there are still barriers to widespread adoption of peer-to-peer car rental in the UK,” and that the company has “a small team with limited resources.” After considering the challenges, the company said it decided to shut down.
Members are unable to log-in or access the site and the company issued the www.whipcar.com.
