Thrifty Added to New Airport in Northwest Florida

Thrifty Car Rental is the latest car rental company to lease space at the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport, which is scheduled to open May 23. In addition to Thrifty, six other car rental companies - Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz and National – are at the airport.

Atlanta Airport May Increase Rental Car Charges

Officials at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta have proposed a 50-cent customer facility fee increase to help offset the drop in car rentals. The fee increase is expected to generate $24.5 million annually, and will be used to pay down debt on bonds for the airport’s new car rental facility.

Chicago Airport Car Renters May Face New Fee

The $6 to $8 fee increase would go toward funding a consolidated rental car center at O-Hare International Airport. The fee, which could be imposed in the next two months, would be in addition to a $2.75 flat fee and an 8 percent tax already accessed on O'Hare vehicle rentals.

The car rental company said it plans to file this week for a Federal Trade Commission antitrust review of its proposed purchase of Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc. Hertz also made a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday that outlined its views on the advantages of combining with Dollar Thrifty.

Accredited Business Consolidators Corp. (ABS Corp.) announced April 23 that it will create a vehicle and equipment rental company in Central America, known as Grupo Accredited RAC S.A. Concurrently, a corporation in Pennsylvania will be formed to hold the shares of the foreign enterprises.

Budget Offers Renters Fuel-Efficient 2010 Fleet

Among the car rental company’s fleet of approximately 100,000 vehicles, more than half are rated 28 miles per gallon or better (highway) by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These vehicles include the Hyundai Accent, Ford Focus, Pontiac G6, Nissan Altima and Ford Taurus.

Southwest Airlines to Launch at South Carolina Airports

The low-fare carrier said it won’t require any public assistance, which allows the state’s lawmakers to drop the proposed 5 percent car rental fee. Southwest will receive the Charleston County Aviation Authority’s startup package, which includes a temporary waiver of landing fees, up to $10,000 in marketing assistance and up to $150,000 in startup costs.
