A recent study by Consumer Reports found that one in six vehicles on the Uber and Lyft platforms have an open recall for an unaddressed safety issue. Consumer Reports based its findings on data collected from 94,000 ride-hailing vehicles registered in the New York City and Seattle areas.

"We found vehicles with glaring issues that pose serious risks, such as deadly Takata airbags that could hurt or kill the driver or front-seat passengers," Consumer Reports wrote on its website. Another example of unfixed defects is the 2011 Sonata, which currently has a recall for engine failure that could result in the vehicle stalling, "increasing the risk of a crash.”

Consumer Reports could not determine if any customers have been injured due to safety defects. However, the advocacy group said that the ride-hailing companies have not done enough to ensure vehicles in open recalls are being properly fixed.

"CR thinks stronger safety recall laws are needed, especially as Uber and Lyft work to grow their business in the coming years and as other smaller players enter the industry."
