Avis to Offer WiFi Hot Spot in Cars
With this service, customers can now surf the Internet from their rental vehicle.
For $10.95 a day, Avis Rent a Car is now renting a portable wireless Internet router that broadcasts a signal to your laptop and anybody else in your car, the Star-Telegram reports.
The service, marketed as Avis Connect, was recently launched at five airports across the country.
The lightweight router, made by Autonet Mobile in San Francisco, plugs into a car's cigarette lighter and can sit anywhere in the car to broadcast an Internet signal to your laptop. You can also take the router out of the car and plug it into a wall outlet; it reaches the Internet over a cellular data network.
The new service is aimed at business and leisure travelers, said Mike Caron, vice president of product and program development at Avis.
According to the Star-Telegram, some of its competitors, including Enterprise, National and Alamo, say they're aware of Avis Connect but don't plan similar services.
