Alamo Rent A Car called it “rare and regrettable.” The auto rental company is referenced in an Internet article about a woman who rented a vehicle in which three out of the four tires were dangerously low on tread and a rear tire had a steel belt exposed.

The article, written by Mike McKnight and posted on WOWT.com, states that Susan Fidone rented a car with bald tires. She was renting the car for a 1,600-mile trip.

But Alamo apologized and upgraded her to another car. The worn tires on the original rental have been replaced.

Fidone took the vehicle home, and as she was packing the vehicle for her trip, a neighbor noticed the tires looked bad. “I thought he was joking,” Fidone said.

The Alamo spokesperson says the company’s safety check system is computer-based. Alamo added it had no idea how the bald tires slipped through without detection.
