A deal that would allow the state of Florida to purchase 61 miles of track for a commuter rail system from a private company passed in the House but was postponed in the Senate, according to the Associated Press.

Although supporter U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown assured lawmakers that the federal government will help pay for the project, the Senate bill included a $2 daily charge added to car rentals at international airports in central and South Florida, said CNNmoney.com.

Tourism and rental car industries oppose the Senate bill because of the auto rental surcharge, which would have to be approved by voters in the affected counties.

Local supporters are willing to tax themselves to pay for the rail project, said Senate Majority Leader Dan Webster, R-Winter Garden, who sponsored the surcharge provision.
