Budget Customer Arrested for Drugs in Rental Car
Port Authority police set up a sting at the Budget Rent A Car location at New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport to catch a man who left a stash of heroin in a rental vehicle.
A man was arrested on drug charges at Newark Liberty International Airport after returning a Chevrolet Cruze rental car to the airport’s Budget Rent A Car location with $2,500 worth of heroin under the dashboard, according to a report by the New York Daily News.
Carlos Tavarez, 30, referred to the stash of “Fat Boy” heroin as medicine for his child when he attempted to retrieve the drugs, according to the report. Budget employees notified the Port Authority police, who then went undercover as Budget workers when Tavarez returned, Port Authority Spokesman Joe Pentangelo told the New York Daily News.
The undercover detectives instructed Tavarez to fill out a lost-and-found form, which is thereby stated he owned the package and warranted his arrest, authorities told the New York Daily News.
Tavarez was charged with possession of heroin and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, authorities told the New York Daily News.
