Canada Woman Smuggles 70,000 Ecstasy Tablets in Her Rental Car
The drugs have an estimated value of $500,000 to $2.1 million. The woman is expected to get at least 10 years in federal prison.
Last week a 34-year-old Montreal woman was caught with 70,000 tablets of ecstasy and other drugs, where they sat vacuum-sealed and stuffed into the gas tank of her rental car.
Tara Hynes was convicted by a federal jury for smuggling the drugs into the U.S. at the Champlain border crossing — one of the main crossings for travel between Montreal and New York City — on June 2, according to the local newspaper Press Republic.
Hynes' lawyer claimed she didn’t know the drugs, which are estimated to value between $500,000 and $2.1 million, were in the vehicle. Her sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 19, and prosecutors expect that she will get at least 10 years in prison.
