Car Rental One-Way Fees Compared
In light of the recent airplane groundings, Cars.com calculated one-way rental fees for three major RACs.
Travelers whose flights have been delayed or cancelled due to airline emergency safety inspections may be interested in driving to their destinations instead. To help passengers determine the cost of an auto rental for a one-way trip, Cars.com calculated fees for renting a mid-size car.
The comparison used Chicago’s O’Hare airport as the starting point and Charlotte, N.C., as the destination, a full day’s drive of 797 miles.
Prices vary widely, with Enterprise the most expensive option at $773.74 ($175.99 per day plus an additional 75 cents per mile). National offers a cost of $567.68 (no per-mile charges), while Hertz is the least expensive of the three calculations at $302.75 (again, no per-mile charges). At this time, Cars.com found, no discounts are available for grounded travelers.
