Car Rental Scam Alleged in India
Victims lend vehicles to rental company, but owner disappears.
A woman in India has disappeared with 17 high-end vehicles after convincing people to loan the vehicles to her car rental agency, according to the Times of India Group.
Agnes Menezes allegedly told the victims that she ran Menezes’ Rentals, a car rental agency that supplied vehicles to Mumbai-based businesses.
Police said she told the alleged victims that she would provide them enough money to take care of the payments on the car loan, but also bring them some profit. The owners stopped receiving their payments, however, in April. The 17 vehicles included Maruti Esteems, Mahindra Scorpios, Honda Civics, and Mitsubishi Lancers.
Police suspect that Menezes has sold the missing cars.
A police team visited Menezes’ home on Aug. 26, but police said she possibly left a few minutes before they arrived.
Additionally police during the previous week seized a Scorpio and a Honda City that were loaned to Menezes. This was following another complaint against her. So far 12 people have filed complaints against her.
