car2go expanded its service to Cologne, Germany on Aug. 29, making 200 smart fortwo cars available for use in the city.

After registering and paying a one-time membership fee, customers will receive a card to access the vehicles at any time and can return the vehicles to any public parking space in the area served by car2go. There is also a per-minute fee each time customers rent a vehicle, which also includes applicable taxes, insurance, fuel and parking costs. The per-minute fee decreases while the vehicle is parked.

The smart fortwo cars are equipped with an automatic start-stop function, air conditioning, and a radio and navigation system. Customers can also use the onboard touchscreen displays to determine which areas of the city are served by car2go.

The car2go region in Cologne, which marks the company’s 15th city worldwide, covers the region within the Militärring road as well as large areas of the city’s Deutz and Kalk districts on the eastern bank of the Rhine.

The vehicles will also be available through select Europcar locations in the area. In addition, car2go customers who also apply for a Europcar partner card can rent vehicles from Europcar’s fleet. Specifically, the partner card grants customers a 15% discount on Europcar’s best-available daily rate.

“I’m convinced that car2go will soon be as much a part of Cologne as the city’s famous cathedral,” said Klaus Entenmann, chairman of the management board of Daimler Financial Services AG. “The launch underscores Daimler Financial Services’ pioneering role with regard to innovative.”
