According to the Miami Herald, the Miami Parking Authority approved a two-year trial project with Daimler’s car2go car-sharing program to bring rentals by the minute to the city.
Throughout Miami’s streets, 250 smart fortwo mini-cars will be parked beginning this summer.
Drivers with car2Go Membership cards, which are available for a one-time $30 payment, can drive off in one of the vehicles and pay per minute. Once drivers are finished with the vehicle, they can drop it off at any on-street parking spot within the city.
car2go has become one of the fastest growing car-sharing companies with more than 4,000 smart fortwo vehicles operating in 12 cities across Europe and North America, according to a recent statement from car2go, a subsidiary of Daimler. In the past six months, the number of members and rental transactions has doubled to include 100,000 members and more than 2 million rentals.
“car2Go will continue to rapidly expand its business operations in the future,” Daimler Board of Management Chairman Klaus Entenmann said. “We’ll be operating in around 20 cities by the end of the year, and the number of customers we serve will certainly once again rise sharply.”
