car2go has announced that its one-way carshare service is being upgraded. Its Austin fleet will now be made up of hundreds of new Mercedes-Benz CLA and GLA compact vehicles that will use the latest app-based technology.

This upgrade is expected to be completed in its Austin fleet by the end of November, according to car2go.

In 2009, car2go established its North American headquarters in Austin; it was also the first city in North America to experience car2go’s one-way carsharing. Since then, car2go’s carsharing service has expanded to 10 other U.S. and Canadian cities.

“Austin is where it all started,” said James Emery, general manager of car2go Austin. “It was here where one-way carsharing was proven possible in North America, and it is here we are turning a big page in car2go’s history. Fantastic new vehicles and the easiest, most powerful app experience yet are giving Austinites the ability to travel in style, safety, and comfort while avoiding the expense and inconvenience of car ownership. …”

car2go’s Mercedes-Benz vehicles accommodate four to five passengers. Every Mercedes-Benz vehicle is equipped with blind spot sensors, adaptive braking, and a rearview camera, according to the company.
