Chicago Midway International Airport opened its consolidated car rental center, which holds eight car rental companies, on April 9, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The new facility houses the Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, National, Thrifty and Enterprise rental car companies, officials said. Vehicles will be fueled, washed and prepared for rental at the facility.

Gregg Cunningham, a spokesman for the Aviation Department, said the five-level center can hold 1,870 vehicles and replaces rental car facilities in the airport's main parking garage and nearby. Rental car kiosks in the terminal will also close.

Passengers will be shuttled from the terminal to the center in buses displaying the rental car companies' names and logos.

The new rental car structure features “green” amenities, including solar panels and wind turbines to generate power, a detention basin to manage storm water and equipment to collect rainwater for irrigation.

Construction of the $55 million facility began in August 2011.
