Enterprise Rent-A-Car employees helped put the 10-millionth tree in the ground as part of an initiative to plant 50 million new trees in 50 years throughout Europe and North America. The tree was planted at Heartwood Forest in Hertfordshire, England.

Volunteers from some of Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s 14 branches around the Heartwood Forest area took part and planted saplings at the site. Around 1,000 trees were planted, consisting of a mixture of native broadleaf tress including hazel, rowen, cherry, willow and oak.

Launched in 2007, the Enterprise Rent-A-Car 50 Million Tree Pledge celebrates the company’s 50th anniversary as a way of saying thank you to customers. It has been funded through a $50 million pledge from the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation.

“It is exciting to be planting the 10 millionth tree of our global program in the U.K., especially at a new location like Heartwood Forest,” said Bridget Long, general manager, London & South East at Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

“To date, we have helped enrich many areas with new trees, as well as helping bring back to life areas blighted by forest fire and other damage, especially in North America. This initiative will see an average of more than 2,700 trees planted every day for 50 years. That’s nearly two a minute. This is just one way we can give back to the communities where we operate.”

Enterprise has partnered with the Woodland Trust for a number of years to deliver the U.K. portion of its global tree planting project. So far, this has resulted in Enterprise supporting the planting of over 700,000 trees in the U.K., with more than 400,000 of those in association with the Woodland Trust, according to the company.

“The fact that Heartwood Forest has been selected for the 10 millionth tree in Enterprise’s 50 Million Tree Pledge is tremendously important,” said Louise Neicho, Heartwood Forest site manager for the Woodland Trust. “As England’s largest new native woodland, Heartwood Forest is playing a vital part in promoting biodiversity and helping species that had been at risk to flourish. We welcome investment from business to help us develop this vital new woodland, and we thank Enterprise for supporting us in this generous way.”
