Ford announced at the North American International Auto Show that it will be expanding its Chariot ride-sharing service to eight cities this year. Of the eight cities, the app-based service will operate in at least one global city, according to the company.
Chariot is a crowd-sourced shuttle service that operates 14-passenger Ford Transit vans. These shuttles pick up passengers headed in the same direction along optimized routes. Ford Smart Mobility LLC acquired Chariot in September 2016.
“This year, the expansion of our business as an auto and mobility company moves into even higher gear,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s president and CEO. “We’re introducing even more new vehicles and technologies to make life better for millions of people in the near term, plus we’re presenting a vision and partnering with cities to move more people even more efficiently in the future.”
Ford’s Chariot ride-sharing service currently operates in San Francisco and Austin. The expansion of this service highlights the company’s drive to expand into growing mobility services, according to Ford.
