NeighborCar, a peer-to-peer carsharing program, looks to launch its pilot program in Chicago this spring, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune.
Starting in the Pilsen and Bridgeport neighborhoods, NeighborCar will connect drivers to car owners who are willing to rent out their vehicles, Sharon Feigon, NeighborCar project director, told the Chicago Tribune.
Car owners will set the rental rates and drivers will be able to use the car for a set price and time period, according to the report.
"It's a great program for saving people money, and there are also a lot of environmental benefits," Feigon told the Chicago Tribune. "The owners of the car get paid some of the money. The renters get cheaper rates for vehicles already in their neighborhood. This creates more incentives for people to share their cars."
Alternative Transportation for Chicagoland, a division of nonprofit Center for Neighborhood Technology, will be running NeighborCar. The program received a $715,118 grant over two years from the Federal Highway Administration, says the report.
