Neighbors Upset Over Airport Expansion
The pollution and increased traffic expected from a new transportation hub near the Memphis International Airport has surrounding residents outraged.
A $48 million ground transportation hub set to be built near the Memphis International Airport that will house car rental companies and buses has neighbors upset, WREG-TV News in Memphis reports.
Surrounding residents say the project will cause traffic and pollution in their quiet community. They say they have had a long, strained relationship with the airport, who owns the wooded lot next door.
The 78-acre wooded lot has been a make-shift park for neighbors in this community and when they heard about Memphis International's plan to bulldoze, they were outraged.
The airport authority says the transportation hub is aimed at cutting shuttle traffic at the airport and improving customer service.
According to WREG, some car rental companies are protesting since recently the airport forced them to charge customers a $4/day fee to help pay for the new transportation hub. The companies fear travelers will go to their competitors, off airport grounds.
