New Orleans City Councilman Faces Charge for Stealing Rental Car
New Orleans City Councilman Jon Johnson, who pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges on Jul. 18, is now facing a new criminal charge for failing to return a rental car in 2005.
New Orleans City Councilman Jon Johnson, who pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges on Jul. 18, is now facing a new criminal charge for failing to return a rental car, according to Nola.com. This offense is punishable by up to five years in prison along with a fine of $5,000.
Johnson rented a 2005 Chevy Classic from Vanguard Car Rental in Kenner, La. on Aug. 21, 2005. Although the vehicle was supposed to be returned on Sept. 8, it was still missing as of Dec. 5 that year.
Vanguard Car Rental sent a letter to Johnson’s address demanding the car back and on Nov. 2, 2005 received a letter in return signed “A. Bartile.” Kenner Police Chief Steve Caraway said he does not know who Bartile is, according to the news source.
The rental company wished to pursue charges and a warrant was issued for Johnson on Jan. 12, 2006. The Kenner Police department was notified that Johnson wished to turn himself in, says the article.
