In 1981, Nicholson started her career with Enterprise as a management trainee and was named the president in 2008 and CEO in 2013. She became the company’s first non-family CEO. Currently, she’s expanding the business in the U.S. and overseas — to a projected $19.4 billion this year, according to the magazine.

Fortune magazine editors compiled the list based on the size and importance of the woman's business in the global economy; the health and direction of the business; the arc of the woman's career; and social and cultural influence.
