COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio's House last week approved a $5.5 billion transportation financing package, backed by Governor Bob Taft, which calls for a 50-cents-per-day car rental tax. In addition, the bill includes a $8 vehicle registration fee hike, a $8 vehicle title fee hike, and a phased in 6-cents per-gallon gas tax.
The bill (HB 87) features a smog-test exemption for all vehicles less than five years old. Legislators added the rental tax to pay for a $29 million buyout of contracts with private emissions-testing companies.
