Reno Man Accused of Using Rented U-Haul Truck to Stage Accident
He allegedly drove truck into his parked Mercedes in an effort to collect insurance money.
A Reno man has been charged with plotting to use a rented U-Haul truck to stage an accident so he could use the insurance money to buy a new car, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal.
Mohammed Alshehry, 28, was arrested June 22 and was in jail as of June 25 in lieu of $50,000 bail on two charges of insurance fraud.
Alshehry is accused of plotting with Ashley Crew to drive a rented U-Haul truck into his parked 1999 Mercedes, while his mother, Raquel Palma, was inside.
Days after the accident, a Reno police traffic detective received a tip from the teenage mother of Alshehry’s child that he had solicited many people to help him stage the accident. The teen said she was present when he paid Crew and gave her marijuana for agreeing to do it, according to an affidavit.
Alshehry was allegedly present when Crew had rented the truck and had inquired about the insurance she purchased because he wanted to make sure it had the greatest coverage. Crew told investigators the day after the accident Alshehry came to her home to show her photos he took of the damaged Mercedes on his cell phone, the affidavit said. He told her not to talk about the accident again.
The insurance company for the rental truck denied Crew’s claim. But the insurer of the Mercedes paid nearly $14,000 to the car’s lien holder and another $9,000 to Alshehry’s mother, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal.
