Car thefts are on the rise in Palm Springs, Calif., with many incidences involving rental vehicles being taken from companies’ lots, according to a report by The Desert Sun.
The cars were taken from off-site lots where rental car companies store vehicles that are not in use. The keys for many of those vehicles were left inside the cars, according to the report.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau reported that only 5.4% of vehicle thefts involved incidents where keys were left in cars in 2012. But by 2014, that number rose to 6.7%, according to the report.
