San Diego Airport Prepares for Construction of New Conrac Facility
Creation of the new facility is part of “Destination Lindbergh,” a plan to revamp operations at San Diego's airport to improve efficiency.
The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority said on Monday that environmental work began recently in preparation for a new car rental facility to be built at San Diego’s Lindbergh Field airport, according to the San Diego Business Journal.
The new facility, which will be built by the airport authority, will be located at the airport runway’s north side. The agency said the facility will make rental agencies’ operations more efficient by combining them in one location, and relieve congestion caused by their shuttles.
The relocation of the car rental operations is part of the first phase of “Destination Lindbergh”, a plan to revamp operations at the airport to make it more efficient. The plan calls for moving most of the airport operations to the north side of the facility from the current southern locations.
In addition to the car rental facility, the plan also calls for mass transit center that includes bus, trolley, rail and possibly high-speed rail stops. The project is led by the San Diego Association of Governments, the area’s transportation planning agency.
The airport authority did not provide new cost estimates on the car rental project or mass transit center, but a preliminary estimate on relocating all operations was more than $6 billion.
