San Diego International Airport to Build Rental Car Center
Sundt Construction Inc. and Austin Commercial will start construction for the rental car center in May 2013 and plan to complete it in July 2015.
The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority selected Sundt Construction Inc. and its joint venture partner Austin Commercial to build a $180 million consolidated rental car center (conrac) at the San Diego International Airport.
Instead of the rental car facilities spread along Pacific Coast Highway as they are currently, the project will move the facilities to a centralized location.
Design and preconstruction work have already begun. Construction will start in May 2013 and are scheduled to be completed in July 2015.
“This project is the first major component of the airport’s long-range plan to reduce airport traffic congestion and bring passengers closer to Interstate 5 and commuter rail lines,” Jon Wald, senior VP of Sundt, said. “The facility also will help improve air quality by removing multiple shuttle vans from the streets and will simplify the trip to and from a single, centralized rental car lot for passengers.”
