MAYFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio –- In a new survey of rental car customers, 19% said they always buy collision damage waivers at the counter, and another 19% said they sometimes buy them.
Conducted by the Progressive group of insurance companies, the study concluded that 24% of rental consumers buy CDWs because they don’t know whether their personal auto policy provides enough coverage. A total of 8% said they purchase the waivers because they feel pressured by the counter agent.
A total of 63% of respondents said they bought waivers because they wanted extra coverage. Of those renters who said they buy waivers, 9% bought them for business travel, 45% bought them for leisure travel, and 41% bought them for both business and leisure travel.
Younger respondents were more likely to purchase waivers at the counter. Respondents in the 18-24 age group were most likely to pur-chase waivers (58%), followed by the 25-34 age group (42%), 35-54 age group (35%), and 55-64 age group (27%). The majority of consumers ages 55-64 reported never having bought CDWs (70%).
All survey participants had rented a car within the past three years.
