Zipcar Survey Reveals Car Ownership Trends of Millennial Generation
Zipcar’s millenials study surveyed more than 1,000 adults between ages 18 and 34 on their attitude toward car ownership, technology and transportation.
Zipcar examined the attitudes and behaviors of the millenial generation —18- to 34-year-olds — related to car ownership, technology and transportation in an independent study released on Feb. 28.
The study found that the increasing availability of on-demand mobility services, including car sharing, ride sharing and vehicle sharing, helps millennials avoid car ownership.
As well, the high cost of car ownership and environmental concerns associated with excessive driving compel millennials to drive less.
Millennials consider mobile devices and on-demand transportation apps more important than car ownership, according to the study. The study revealed that 65% of millennials say losing their phone or computer would have a greater negative impact on their daily routine than losing their car.
Additionally, 73% of millennials would rather shop online than drive or ride public transit to the store and 47% choose to spend time with friends online instead of driving to see them in person.
KRC Research conducted the study on Dec. 6 and Dec. 9 using more than 1,000 adults nationwide, aged 18 and over, with 980 licensed drivers.
