Didi Chuxing will suspend its ridesharing service Hitch for the second time this year after a driver was accused of raping and killing a female passenger in the eastern city of Wenzhou, China, according to numerous reports.
The passenger, a 20-year-old woman surnamed Zhao, was allegedly killed by the man who was driving her Friday. Police said they found the man, a 27-year-old named only as Zhong, on Saturday and that he confessed to raping and killing the passenger.
Didi, China’s largest ride-hailing company with roughly 550 million users, said it was “immensely saddened by the tragedy” and that two senior managers of its Hitch ridesharing service have been removed from their positions, according to a company statement.
Officials from China's ministries of transport and public security announced that they will tighten oversight of the country's ridesharing services to ensure further passenger safety.
Didi has agreed to upragding its processes for handling ride complaints and will submit a compliance plan to the government before Sept. 1.
